Recently after burning discs in win 7 using Nero or Eac or Cd architect & using TDK & Sony discs my LG DVD writer burns discs Ok but if I try to play them it comes up saying the disks are blank. I have another writer a philips that can read some of the discs but mostly says the same. When using DVDs everything works fine. Any suggestions?

Combination CD/DVD drives have two separate lasers that work at different wavelengths. These lasers are mass produced and considered disposable hardware. Frequently one laser or the other will fail.

Long and short is that if the drive works partially then the issue is either a dirty lens or a failed/failing laser.

You could try a cleaning disc for DVD players, trying a different make of disc or burning at a lower speed.

You say "it burns discs ok" but that is probably only your software that is indicating that - try the above suggestions.

As northumbria61 said, there are 2 lasers. The CD laser seems to be OK but you are having trouble with the DVD laser - is this what you mean? Or does you Marantz CD player play DVDs as well?

I had a similar problem once, and thought that it was the discs (bulk buys) that I was purchasing at the time was to fault.

Eventually I purchased a new LG brand CD/DVD unit, and the problem was cured. The price of these units are very reasonable or cheap nowadays. And as an experiment, the replacement CD/DVD unit ran out better in the end. Saved a lot of hassle and time.

Marvin 42 no the CD & DVD burning is OK, The cds play on the marantz, and the DVDs play on my Sony Blue Ray & my pc. Whereas the cds come up in both drives (an LG & Philips) on my pc as blank discs. Which leads me to believe it is a software problem. Anyway I have bought another writer this morning and will install later and see if this will fix it. If not I think I will have to wipe the HD and reinstall everything and see if that sorts out the glitch

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I got a new writer & installed it and it worked once then kept showing blank disc. After searching around the web I found that other users with the same problem put it down to I tunes. I have completely reinstalled my C Drive (minus I tunes) and now I have 3 writers working perfectly. Interestingly on one of the drives, I used to have a battle with the disc drawer to stop it ejecting every disc I put in, and now that it working fine.

So were you trying to burn CD's from iTunes? I query that because there is an interesting article here that says - All Apple internal CD-RW drives work with iTunes. To see if iTunes works with an external drive, choose Preferences from the iTunes menu, then click the CD Burning tab. If your drive is listed, it will work with iTunes.

enter link description here I don't use iTunes so can't really comment on it.
