BT internet connection problem

The connection disc they sent didn't work so I phoned the helpline. I was talked through a dialup connection but I couldn't get it to work.
I used my outgoing ISP to access the BT site and set up a connection that way. There were still problems and I've discovered that their Internet Connection Manager fights with Win98SE which is my OS. Obviously, I can still get online but that's another story.

According to the online help the first connection(which is the one I was talked through and is the one that works) is using the Pay-As-You-Go number but I'm registered for Anytime. When I click on that icon I'm told it can't find the modem.

I seem to have messed up here and I would be glad of any help to sort this out.

I think you will find that you need to remove your old connection first, because the computer is confused as to which to dial into. If you go into your control panel, connections, and remove any connections that are there.
Also go to add remove programes and remove any connection softwear installed. (including BT)
Then reboot your computer.
And reinstall your new softwear.
Hope this helps.

I thought it would mean starting again but I'm just wary of removing anything!

Thanks for your help.

I meant to say that I'll give it a try now.
