Can a setup be achieved with the wireless router in one room connected to the telephone socket and the wireless enabled laptop in another room.
The HomeHub seems to have a network name and wep string on the back.

Yes it can.

Just follow the setup guide that comes with the hardware and input the network name and wep string to set it up initially. Then to secure the network change the details given as these will be the default settings and the same as everybody else's

Thank you, but how do I change the wep string in the router?

Just had a look at the BT site

Which says

"You will need to follow the instructions in your set up guide to install your BT Home Hub. Please wait until your BT Total Broadband service has been activated before you start the installation. We will let you know by email and voice message once your BT Total Broadband service has been activated."

No actual details on there so I guess the address of the router (for e.g. 192.168.1.1) will be in the installation guide.

192.168.1.1 will not get you in to the Home Hub setup, you need to use bthub.config
