Tantalizingly it could see the file names at least -I'm not sure about the actual content

It found the info. for free and let me down load 1 GB out of 390 or so but wanted payment to download the Recovery Wizard. I was in the process of this when it started to direct me to a Chinese website I didn't trust so I aborted the transaction before I put my card number in.

Anyone any thoughts? The data is there but its got to do with partitions and that so I'm all at sea.

Brought it to one of those repair places all the guy could say was hard drive is broken you could try online recovery but no guarantees and they are expensive.

I've never used it, but I've heard others on here recommend it, I think. Look at Recuva. It's free, so I guess there's no harm trying.

Can you see the drive in Explorer, if not then in disk management?

A simple cmd prompt

chkdsk /f/r

may restore access to the files.

That asked me to run check in elevated mode?

Click Start, type cmd.

Right click the icon and Run as Administrator

Oh you have to specify the drive letter

chkdsk g: /f /r

or whatever letter the external drive is
