Broadband speed testing

  fullyfitted 20:40 11 Jan 2011

I'm using XPhome , SP3 ,provider is o2 who say I should get about 7 meg
I've been trying different sites to check my broadband speed and whilst I expected some variation I'm confused at the range.

For instance "thinkbroadband" provided by PCA.

Download 6400 kbps
upload 1050 kbps

Download 6500 kbps
Upload 960 kbps

ZDNet and namesco

Download 780 kbps
upload N/a and and 230 kbps

"testmy speed"

Download 2000 kbps
upload 900 kbps

These are average results taken at various times of the day

I do get very confused and don't always know my kbps from my mega bytes but from the way the Pc is responding to downloads and playing Utube video I suspect the first readings are more accurate.

If anyone can explain in simple terms I would be obliged

Many thanks

Different BB speed tests sometimes give different results so its best to stick to one.

Even with Virgin Media I can get different results from different test sites.

1000 kb = 1 Mb for broad band so your 6400 would be about 6.4 Mb

Depending on the time of day it may very due to the amount of people on the net.

Many thanks, as I said I'm happy enough with the performance of the PC and really it was idle curiosity as to the variation,

Thanks again

Use the Speedtest site click here. It'll keep a history of your previous tests for comparison, which can be accessed via the 'Your Results' link near the top.

I think it does it by IP address, so as long as yours doesn't change (unlikely with the same ISP), it will always be there for you to see/compare. G
