Broadband slower on Desktop than low spec Laptop

  Watson 13:31 04 Nov 2006

I have two PCs - a P4/2.66GHZ desktop with 1.25G RAM and a Celeron 1.3GHz laptop with 512M RAM.

Internet is fast on laptop (ADSLguide speedcheck shows 2.1 to 2.8Mbps down) but very slow on desktop (190kbps to 480kbps down) on a 4.2Mbps connection.

I've tried swapping connections on ADSL modem/router and tested wired/wireless options but every time the desktop is at least 70% slower.

I've done the usual defrag, new 7200rpm hard disk, to no avail. With only my browser running Task Manager shows 28 processes and CPU usage 7-25%. On laptop it shows 57 process, CPU usage 0-7%.

Any ideas?

You could try tweaking your RWIN/MTU settings. First download DrTcp from click here then follow this click here

Changing the MTU value can also improve things. Find your optimum MTU by doing this click here

Reboot the PC after changes.

It's wise to make a note of the default settings before tweaking but blanking out all the boxes and saving hasthe same effect.

There are some RWIN/MTU values suggested to try click here if you prefer.

Thanks a million - after months of misery it's all working brilliantly! Download speed now 2.8Mbps instead of 190-480kbps.
