Braodband, firewalls and smut-spam

Nothing serious, but last month I went ADSL with Deamon. Great, sor far, except every time I am online, after a while I get a message box appearing, entitled 'Messenger Service', and it contains some blurb encouraging me to visit a smut-site, each one different every time I log-on.

It's annoying more than anything. I am running MacAfee Firewall; what should I be doing to block this?

Thanx to all who respond, in advance.

start-control panel-administrative tools-services-drill down to messenger-double click and enure 'start up type' is disabled and 'service status' is stopped. A firewall will not stop these;-))

I have a friend who has just got a computer and was continually receiving these messages. After some investigation I was able to stop them in the way Gandalf describes.
I still have Messenger enabled on my own computer but have never received such a message. Have I just been lucky? We both have dial-up connections.
