Brand new Floppy disc drive will not work

Hi,
Can someone help me please,
I've just installed a new floppy disc drive (internal)due to bits of floppy being stuck inside the old drive, and cannot get it to read or write.
I must admit that since installing win XP some time ago on top of win 98 I have had quite a bit of trouble with the old floppy drive. However I would have thought that this new drive obtained yesterday from PC World would have just started to work.
When I put it in and switched on, no wizard came up, should it?
Also when I go into my computer and click on the symbol for the floppy it takes ages before the hour glass goes off and the window opens.
When it does open, on the general tab, the box at the side of the picture of the floppy drive has nothing in it, just the flashing curser.

As the connecting cable can fit either way, turn it 180 and try it again.

make sure

1. ribbon cale is full inserted at rear of drive

2. power cable is full inserted at rear of drive

3. ribbon cable correct way round in drive

4. ribbon cable fully inserted in motherboard

5. FDC (floppy drive controller) enabled in BIOS should be if this is a swp for an old drive.
