Booting from external HDD

I have tried to boot from an external HDD,but after successfully booting once the external then fails to boot up.Can anyone inform of a method of booting up externally successfully.

You can boot but MS say Windows is designed not to run from an external drive.
It is possible but far too complicated to achieve,

Sorry I am slow in answering but have been away. Thanks for your reply Quiet Life I will just have to plod on and eep trying. I did succeed once so must continue.

I have been able to boot an alternative operating system loaded onto a Castlewood Orb Disk (similar to a high capacity Zip disk) using a boot manager, but I've not tried it using an external HDD. If the external HDD is recognised by the boot manager is may be possible. Different boot managers provide different facilities. The boot manager I have used is System Commander with Windows 98SE, but that is a bit old now.
