A friend asked me to look at his pd as he was having a problem with it. He left it doing a defrag overnight as it was being slow, usually takes a few minutes. The next morning seing that it was complete he clicked on next and the machine died on him. There is no post beep, I could not even get it to start n safe mode but I could get into bios and set it to boot from cd. We put the 1st recovery disck in and tried a re-boot but no response at all. This makes me thnk that it's possibly a psu failure or a HDD failure. Any help would be appreciated.

There is no post beep,

Has it ever beeped?

I could get into bios and set it to boot from cd.

If it will boot to BIOS the PSU motherboard CPU all ok.
Can you see the HDD in the BIOS screen?

If you put in a CD can you get it to boot from an XP CD?
Boot to recovery consul and try at the prompt
Fixmbr
and Fixboot reboot and then see if it will boot from the HDD.

Yes, I can see the hdd in the bios screen, but couldn't get the pc to boot from the recovery cd, (Master cd's in Packar Bells case). It just brought up the splash screen then an blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top rt of the screen.

Have to go out now but will be back in about 1.5 hours.
