Boot up Problem

  wotan 19:21 30 Mar 2006

Hi again, my daughter has a Fujitsu/Seimens PC with an AMD 2000+chip, 512mb memory and 60 gb hard drive, running XP Home. The system will not boot up, showing a message which reads " Disk Error, Press CTRL,ALT DELETE to re-start". When she does this, the system runs through exactly the same sequence again ending up with the same message. She has tried booting to safe mode but with the same results and wonders if there could be a problem with the hard drive. She would be grateful for any advice you can give.

If there is a floppy disk in the floppy drive, or a CD in the CD Rom drive take them out.

If not then change boot order in BIOS to Boot from CD 1st then HDD.

Boot from XP CD to recovery consul
Using Recovery Consul

run chkdsk /f
followed by fixmbr

remove CD and see if the PC will boot from HDD

Thanks Fruitbat, I will give this a try and see how it goes, apparently the system has been freezing and acting up quite a lot before this happened so it may need a trip to the experts. I will close the thread for now and get back if we have no joy. Many thanks for the help.
