Which is better to use the on-board spound from the main board or install a sound card.I already have a Sound Blaster 1024 card which I can use. What do I have to do to switch the on-board card off??
Personally, I would go with the sound card. Onboard sound can be turned off within the BIOS.
Onboard sound can prove pretty good - I used the C-Media 8738 chipset on my Elite motherboard for some years before being given a SoundBlaster Live! There was a difference - the Creative card added a little more "punch", but the C-Media chipset offered a level of transparency that was quite surprising; it was also very good on 3D effects. In the end though it depends on how good are your speakers? Not much point in having an expensive sound card with poor or average quality speaker setups.
The 1024 card is at least 5 years old and I think you will find any recent onboard sound chip will be as good if not better.
Thanks for the response, food for thought.
