on-board audio device cannot start

Hi!
Have fitted Gigabyte 7VT600p-RZ mobo. Everything up and running OK except on-board sound.

Device is C-Media AC97 Audio Device

Switched on in BIOS
Set correctly in Services- ie automatic (started).
Device Manager says device not working properly. Have tried updating drivers (it says 'already have latest').
Have uninstalled device and then run New Hardware wizard.

Get error message 'device cannot start.'

Any ideas?

Just realised - running Windows XP pro

Might be worth uninstalling driver, download one from click here to the desktop, then point to it to install.

Thanks for your reply.

Have just tried that link.

Uninstalled device then ran New Hardware wizard. Result said 'device can not start (code 10) and finished.

Then tried updating driver through Device Manager. Said 'best driver already installed'.

Is it "enabled" in BIOS?

Yes

Sounds like (no pun intended) faulty mobo.

  Billyke 13:16 30 Jul 2010

Like the pun.

Everything else on the mobo seems OK so I guess the only other solution is get a sound card. That should work, shouldn't it?

Should do, and cheap as chips if you only need basic sound.

Chips? Is that another pun?

Will try that. Many thanks everyone for your time and suggestions.

Before you buy,

Avoid New Hardware wizard and device manager route, download drivers and install manually.

error message suggests it may be faulty hardware but i would plump for software conflict...
