.bmp file size reduction

I am currently tearing my hair out trying to get the size of .bmp images down.

My problem is that I have to place these images on to a touch screen for home control (Elan Systems) the only format I can use for these images is .bmp.

The properties of each file are as follows:

width 39px
height 33px
colours 256
file size 1.6KB
Uncompressed size 1.3KB (no mistake)
Compression ratio 0.8

I have tried everything I know using Fireworks and photoshop CS and have not been able to get below 2.4 KB which Elan will not let me load on to the panel.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in anticipation

You'll be restricted by whatever degree of compression your image editing software can create. I'm not familiar with Fireworks or Adobe.

Can you access the images already on the elan system?

To De Marcus Via Tools software has a collection of images you can add to the panel for example BBC World Service etc. We need to add further independent images in the correct format.
