Blue startup screen when booting up

  peterjm 09:53 30 Apr 2009

As stated in the title. I have recently had this screen which eventually gives me 3 options, either to install WXP or repair a problem with WXP or to start up normally.
I go to the latter course and it boots OK but it is a nuisance going through this every time.
Appreciate your comments.

If you have the windows cd in the drive, try taking it out then reboot.

A little more detail about the screen please.

Have you an option to use recovery console to repair or install?

Start - run - type msconfig press ok

boot.ini tab, can you post the details of your boot.ini file?

  peterjm 10:54 30 Apr 2009

Yes, I have those options.

(Boot loader)
Timeout = 5
(Operating Systems)
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/noexecute=optin/fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Setup"

Rename your boot.ini to boot.bak and save

Edit it to read

(Boot loader)
Timeout = 5
(Operating Systems)
mult(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/noexecute=optin/fastdetect

save as boot.ini and retry your boot.

Sorry but you have lost me.

How do I rename, edit it and save as.

I know how to do these things in Photoshop and Word but this is a new area for me.

My Computer - C drive - select boot.ini file -right click - open with (from menu) select note pad.

you should now have boot.ini open in notepad.

File - save as - type in boot.bak -save.

File - new - should now have a blank open notepad

Copy and paste from the post above then

File - save as - type in boot.ini - save.

Thank you Fruit Bat but "right click - open with (from menu) select note pad." doesn't appear to be the case on this computer.

I go to $WIN NT$.~BT which presumably is the file, I right click but there is no evidence of Notepad in the dropdown menu. Please advise. Appreciate your help and patience.

  peterjm 11:29 01 May 2009

I have done a search and the only file found on C is the above in the title.

  peterjm 12:13 01 May 2009

Sorry. It is boot.ini.backup in folder C:\WINDOWS\pss
