Blue screen of death atapi.sys problem

  Grantrh 09:12 29 May 2008

I have a Dell PC running Windows XP Pro
After a couple of hours of usage it crashes with the following error: STOP 0x0000007A
Atapi.sys - address F7344E52 base at F73350000 beginning dump of physical memory

This problem happens persistently often while using Microsoft Word.

Can anyone help me with what the problem might be and what to do about it?

Thank you to all who help in advance.

It could be faulty RAM, a virtual drive, a bad sector in the paging file section of your hard drive, or a faulty I/O controller. Are you running SP2/3 and are you fully up to date with all patches from MS?

Thank you for that PO79 - yes I installed SP3 to try and fix the problem but it hasnt made any difference and all updates are installed.

As this fault mentions Atapi.sys I would suspect you have a problem with the drivers or cable for your disk drives.

1. uninstall and reinstall your DVD /cd drives

2. if no better check Cable to drives is fully inserted at either end or better yet fit a new cable.

Thanks for your help PO79 and Fruit bat.
The HDD has now completely failed so that was the problem.
