Blank dvd not recognised in new computer

  greybeard 18:17 17 May 2006

Packard-Bell P4 running xp with a dvd-rw.
A friend's new computer which doesn't recognise a new blank dvd when inserted.
Instead, the wizard (I think MS own DVD writing wizard) says it's a "full cd".
I checked in control panel/system and there were no problems shown, and the dvdrw seems to be installed and recognised ok.
I checked the region setting for dvd, and there was none selected, so I sected UK - region 2.
This made no difference.

Sorry to have such little info to start with, but I only had 5 minutes in front of it.

Any suggestions for my next moves - what to look for, or try etc on my next visit ?
All help gratefully received.

XP doesn't support DVD burning - I think it comes later with Vista.

Thanks for your quick response, but my friend has beaten me to it. He has now successfully burnt his first dvd. (He's a new silver-surfer)

As I shut down his system, I saved the files, and when he re-opened the pc, he started again from scratch, and it worked ok.
I suspect that I had only seen the system after he had incurred some error, and it had to be cleared by re-booting.
No doubt I will be called upon in the future !
Thanks again.
