Black screen after start up

After start up my computer reaches the Windows XP log-in screen and within a few seconds the screen goes completely black but the screen is not in stand-by mode. The computer is still whirring away as normal. The time from start up to black out has reduced, we were able to get logged in and use it for about 10 mins, but that time has got shorter and shorter until just getting to the log-in page.

Any ideas? The computer is about 5 to 6 years old.

thanks in anticipation

Maybe check the air vents are not clogged up with dust and fluff if so inside will also need cleaning. When inside check that all the fans are working properly.

thanks but no, its all clean and clear of dust. And I checked the temperature in setup and as far as I could tell it was at a normal working temperature.

Sounds like the CPU shutting down to Protect its self from Overheating

See if there is a PC Health in BIOS check CPU

temperature was 44 deg C I think, would this be ok?

It depends on the CPU. Have you tried in Safe Mode to see if it shuts down?

Maybe see if it runs ok in safe mode.

If the screen is totally black it could be a display fault if all else is OK. Is it a CRT monitor or a panel ? Is it a laptop ? If it's a panel can you see the image if you shine a torch onto the blacked out screen.
