BIOS Clock going `haywire

I'm running XP Home on a fairly new (2 months old) mid range computer. Over the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that the clock on the taskbar and in the BIOS has been way out showing dates fron 1890's to 2090's.

Things got worse with and unable to load due to corrupt or missing config sys and I had a load of trouble but with helf from this forum managed to get back into by CD Rom and then Windows .

I have been running AVG but it will for the last month no longer update due to an error I don't understand.

Back to the clock, if I restart then everythings OK. If I shut down for a few minutes then the clock is wrong.

Any ideas anyone

Regards Lizzy

I'd thought about the battery but wouldn't it just default back to the same date it is was just a flat battery
