Hi there, I'm looking for a laptop to take to University with me. I've got around a £500 budget but don't even know where to start. The budget is flexible to some degree if it is really worth it.

Ideally the laptop should have quite a large screen and be able to cope with the latest games, as well as applications like photoshop, quark, adobe illustrator etc.

Thank you kindly in advance for your help.

as well as using your laptop for Photoshop, Quark Xpress, and Adobe illustrator means you'll need a pretty well specified machine - all of those applications make intensive use of the CPU and graphics processor.

click here for details of one machine that would fit the bill. There will be others, it's very much a matter of personal choice. You'll want plenty of RAM, a fast processor, good hard drive capacity, and a decent display, all of which you'll find in the machine in my link.

As the FE said plenty of RAM, a fast processor, good hard drive capacity, and a decent display.

You could try NDC click here who do refurb units.

Your requirement of "be able to cope with the latest games" is a bit of a worry, what sort of games ?

On your £500 ish budget I would suggest :-

Dell XPS M1530

CPU: T9300 Intel Penryn Core2 Duo 2.50GHz (6MB Cache, 800MHz FSB)

Memory: 4GB (4096MB) DDR2 667MHz

Hard Drive: 320GB Serial (SATA) 5400 RPM

Display: 15.4" 1440x900 (WXGA+) CCFL Widescreen Display with TrueLife

Optical Drive: DVD-ReWriter Drive

Video: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Graphics with 256MB Dedicated RAM

Soundcard: Sigma Tel Audio HD

Wireless: Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (A/B/G/Draft-N)

NOTE :- Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 - English

No, why do you ask?

You won't have time for games, you'll be working far too hard!

We just got a samsung R530 for under £400 from Amazon for our youngest who's starting uni in a fortnight. Pretty well specced, wide screen, scrabble tile keyboard with separate number pad. Not a gaming machine though.

If he wants to play games he'll have to take his Xbox.
