best digital sound recorder?

I am looking to record business conferences with a digital recording machine.

I have decided that cassette dictating machines pick up too much noise and hiss.

So what is best, minidisk or digital?

Any recommendations on the best monel? (sub £500).

I think that minidisk (or minidisc) is digital -- it's just that it uses a mini disc instead of a tape.

I have no experience of either, so can't comment on their relative quality. But I would say that background noise is probably nothing to do with whether the recorder is digital or analogue, disc or tape: It's to do with the type and quality of the microphone and the electronic wizardry that more-expensive recorders incorporate to minimise noise. You may spend as much on a good microphone as on the recorder itself.
