Battery problem?

I have been given an old xp based machine, that is sometimes reluctant to start up. When I depress the "on" button the light flashes and thats it.After being left plugged in for a while it fires up!
Could it be the battery on the motherboard needing changing?

It would not hurt to renew the CMOS battery, its a cheap option even if it has no effect.
But at least you would have ruled that out.

Probably a problem with the PSU - CMOS battery failing usually shows up as loss of time/date but, as gengis says, worth a try as they're cheap. Some thoughts click here

Thanks all, it was the battery!
