Barton is just a model designation, like Thoroughbred which you might also have seen. Essentially they're higher performance models with a larger[512]L2 cache than the Thoroughbred. Certain of them also run at 400fsb as opposed to 333fsb or 266fsb. OEM means you just get the chip - the retail version you get the chip and a cooling fan.

Haaa
thanks
so say if i had a m/b that supports 333mhz fsb and upto 2800+ proseccor it might not be ok for a xp2800+ barton. Or is it a case of checking that the new proc is a 333mhz fsb.

If your mobo does support 333fsb and up to xp2800+ then you'll be OK - check your manual or manufacturer's site.

A 2800+ is a barton chip with a 333Mhz cpu.

You can use this chart to work out the fsb, multiplier settings and clock speed of amd cpu's.

the barton 2800+ is good chip if in the future you would like to overclock. the fsb is 166 X 12.5. to get the best of it you need at least pc3200 ram. it's stock speed is set @ 2087mhz.
the 2800 title is, because amd say with their technology, the equivilent speed of an intel 2800mhz chip if i'm not mistaken. and if i am there will be plenty of people out there who will correct me.
