Backup failure

  Brenne 17:13 31 Mar 2012

My Vista home premium OS PC is scheduled to back up files weekly. Since the beginning of March, I have daily had the following warning: "The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason. The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup is retried, the error may not reoccur. (0x800423F3)."

I have retried many times, even trying to backup from scratch, and always received the same warning. I've copied all my important items onto pendrives, but would still like the C and D drives to be backed up on to the second (G) hard drive regularly. Any help would be very welcome.

At a guess, you have a problem with your G drive. Is there any way you can tr backing up to a different drive? If it works, that would tend to confirm the problem. (It's one I've had with an external USB drive)

In Services, check the Volume Shadow Copy Service is set to Automatic,

if not set it to Automatic and then click on Start.

I think you may be right about a problem with the G drive, Ian. This drive had received all previous backups and I thought it was nearly full so I tried deleting earlier files some time ago. However, I have no alternative with which to try your suggestion. Fruitbat's succinct instruction defeated me though! The only reference to the Volume Shadow Copy Service I could find was in an intimidating section headed for "IT specialists", and it made no mention of an "Automatic" tick-box. I remember Fruitbat helping me with another problem a couple of years ago, so I respect his skill but not my incompetence.

You'll find it by- Start Search/Run services.msc

Also, I get occasional backup failures that may be fixed by running chkdsk on source and destination drives.

(or right click drive/Properties/Tools/Check for errors)

C drive will require a reboot to check. It takes a while usually.

Progress report: I used Robinofloxley's help to reach the Volume Shadow Copy Service, and as Fruitbat suggested it was set to Manual, so I changed it to Automatic. I then applied Checkdisk to both the C and G drives, in case (as Ian hinted) there was a problem there. The checks revealed both drives were OK. All set for another attempt to backup the C drive to the G drive, and .... yet again the same error message appears! What next, please?
