Backing Up Microsoft Updates?

  dublincity 20:58 12 Mar 2005

If I should need to re-format my PC with XP Pro (I've only recently learned how to do that) - it can re-format without the loss of any work or software BUT it does involve losing a few dozen Microsoft Updates that would take more than 10 hours to re-download. Is there any way in which I might save / backup these updates onto CD's so that I could re-instal them after re-formatting?

Many Thanks

I save all my updates to CD to avoid the problems that you are concerned with. When you know the update number, usually begins with KB followed by a number,
Go into the Windows Update site, ( via Help & Support, Windows update ) click on Administrator Options. Then select Windows Update Catalogue. Click on Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems. You will see a pick list so scroll down and select your version of Windows. Then click the Search button. All available updates will be shown. Click on this and you will see all avalable. Save as many as you want to the download basket and when finished, download to a destination of your choice. Hope you can follow this OK. It is really very easy ! Good luck.

You could go to click here and download all the updates as files to install manually and save them to your hdd. You could then write them to a cd for future use.

Or..... you could do as Nuts says :-)

You could always ask Microsoft to send you the updates on CD.
It is free of charge and there is no delivery charge.
Check the updates site.

Thanks for all the help - I've spotted that the free updates on CD are for residents of N. America only - that rules me out.

I've just downloaded the AutoStreamer and will look into that ........

Downloading all the updates again in order to save them for later use seems a possibility - but my thinking is that since I'm bang up-to-date right now, i.e. the updates are here anyway, is there not a way that I can locate them (they appear in the diagnostic and uninstaller lists) and copy them just as I would copy program files? I imagine they're coded - I just don't know where to look .............

The updates you have installed now are not obtainable looking through folders.

To download all updates and then installing them one by one is a waste of time as slipstreaming a service pack is faster and you don't need to install the vast majority of updates.

Updates after SP2 will have to installed either through Windows Updates or can even slipstream these single updates.

Or don't you want to install a Service Pack?

I can't yet figure out how to use AutoStreamer.

......... just spotted that Belarc gives 2 hotfixes (KB840987 & KB885836) as needing to be re-installed. How? The Microsoft Update scan says that no further updates are available for me.

My formatting CD has SP1 - then I had a dozen or more updates after that THEN SP2 which I have on CD. So do I spend 10 hours downloading the updates as files (for saving), then use Autostreamer to integrate those files with SP2 and the formatting disk?

.......... these are the updates that I've got at the moment - many or most of which would be lost if I had to re-format. I can't figure out from the Microsoft site how I can download them as files - could be a 10 - 20 hour download ........... ??

You don't need to download them.

Download Service Pack 2 that will contain all the updates...Ok so it's a big download but you get them all in the one file.

For download times...Broadband about 40 mins and 56k a few hours.

But to download the updates above...

Type the KB and number into google: KB840987 and it should reveal a page for download at Microsft.

As for Autostreamer? Did you click vogs second link?

Do you have an XP CD? OR a restore CD as such.
