Backing up files - opening them?

This is probably a silly question - if so apologies right away! I used Start-Access-Backup and chose 'My Docs & settings' and saved to my 2nd HDD, ready for burning onto a CD.
When I tried to open the file, to check what was there (it wasn't the 'normal yellow' folder, just a white icon with a corner folded over) it asks me to choose a prog to open it. This is where I haven't a clue. You will gather my knowledge level is not great!
Can someone put a poor old duffer out of his misery? I don't want to burn it to CD and then not be able to access the stuff on it !!

No you can't read backup files like that. Test by doing a restore.

IMHO If you want to be able to read/open the files straight from the cd, don't use backup, just copy them as they are and burn to a data cd

Thanks guys, ordinary copying it will have to be!
