Backing up computer?

I would like to know how this works. If you back-up your O/S and all the files and the computer crashes how do you reinstate everything. I have always wondered this and thought I would ask the question, especially if you use Paragon or something similar and yet you can't open it to restore, because your computer doesn't boot.

Good backup prorams such as Acronis True Image allow you to make a boot disc which will let you to boot into the backups you have made.

A bootable CD-Rom is a CD from which you boot the PC. This means putting the CD in your CD-Rom drive and power-on or reboot your system. The PC will load a boot image from the CD-Rom and control is given to this boot image.

Thank you for that it always puzzled me on how you would do the back-up, with a non working computer that had crashed out.
