What files (apart from the usual My doc's etc) are ensential to backup/copy? Is it easier and more convvenient to make copies, rather than use any of the complicated backup programmes?

Its quick and easy in XP Pro to back up the whole System State using:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntbackup.exe

I use a batch program which makes it even quicker [just a double click from a shortcut icon]. Edit it to suit your own drive letters:

@echo off
echo off
cls
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo This Batch File Backs-up the Registry
echo.
echo.
echo and System State Files to D:\XP System State Backup.Bkf
echo.
echo.
echo and DVD-RAM on Drive K:
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo Ctr-C to Abort
echo.
echo.
echo.

pause

Start /wait ntbackup backup systemstate /J "System State" /SNAP:off /V:yes /F "D:\XP System State Backup.bkf"

Start /wait ntbackup backup systemstate /J "System State" /SNAP:off /V:yes /F "K:\XP System State Backup.bkf"

exit

Good luck, Evad.
