Can anyone recommend a simple and inexpensive
way to convert AVI files to MPEG2 files,

I know I can do buying Nero plus plug-in
but I wondered if there were other solutions
that people had used.

Try TMPGEnc at TMPGEnc.net

I am sure there are Shareware utilities on the web for converting these formats The one I saw converted the first 5 minutes for free and you had to pay only a few $ for the rest of the programme. I have been told that WINonCD (a CD burning application) can do the same, or at least it burns from AVI to VCD.

I spent £400 on Sonic Foundry SoundForge 6.0 and it was supposed to do just what you are asking...but guess what..you have to pay extra for that facility as a plug-in. What a joke!!

This site should tell you all you need to know.
