I am trying to convert a avi video file a mpg/mpeg but it looses quality iv tryed many programs but none seem to work..can any body sugest a program or how to stop it lacking it quality?

if you do not want to lose much quality, you need to use MPEG2. MPEG4 is acceptable for portable device.

You can get MPEG1 codec free, but MPEG2 codec costs money

if you want industry standard encoder, you can consider MainConcept Encoder click here or Canopus ProCoder click here

ahhhhh. try nero vision express. iv got it and i have all the codecs.. you can do anything with it!!!!!!!

I use Divx on a old TV card to change from Avi and it's the best Codex that I have got on my computer

It works peachy.

It does remind one of the joys of patience though. Still, that's inevitable.
