I am wanting to record an area using a web cam. I have installed the software that came with the camera and it is capable of recording. However if i just record for a very short time its 100s of mb. any idea how i can reduce the file size? i know nothing about video. can i change the capture settings to do so? should i be looking to reduce something, like frames per second etc?

You can use the Movie Maker program built into XP. It will give your several options for file size when you re-encode it. However the smaller the file size the lower the quality of the video.

As said but do not change frame rate or anything just import edit and export to what ever quality you can live with and whichever fornat you need probabaly windows media video wil suffice .You will also have a choice how much you want to compress (file size)
