If you go to AVG's Help files and key in "The AVG Virus Vault" it explains its purpose.

The first port of call should always be a program's Help files - that's what they are there for and are generally extremely comprehensive.

the help files did not say very much, it is the free version.
I tried deleting 1 of the files, notepad.exe and that now will not launch.

The files will be in the vault because they have been quarantined - AVG provides a list of the files that are there.

I suppose you have tried the AVG website for help? click here

I had similar problems but I ended up e-mailing them for advice and got a reply within a few hours.
I now use the Pro version of AVG 7.0 and they give a step by step how to guide on the site.

Hope it helps - sorry I don`t know enough to give the correct advice myself.
