AVG giving windows protection fault.

Using Win Me and installation of AVG free ver is giving problems
The initial installation is ok, AVG will run and scan, but as soon as I complete the primary update from the internet it crashes with BSOD 5 seconds after completion of boot up.

The message I get:- An exception OE has occured at 0028:C00E8BC in VxD VMM(01)+0000D8BC this was called from 0028:C004AAFF in VxD VFAT(01)+0000B223F. I can clear but it repeats and
eventually it will only boot in safe mode or I get a BSOD and windows protection fault.

Norton, avg, Spybot and adaware scans all show clean.
I did not have Norton and AVG on together.

Does anyone have any idea what else I can try to get AVG working.

Try scanning with avg in safe mode.

I was able to scan ok and it showed no problem. The problem only comes on after I update which then allows AVG to run from the system tray. It then continually locks up with BSOD, and the windows protection error message.
