Automatic restart after standby

After years without problems using "standby", my pc now "restarts" itself within 2 or 3 seconds of going into standby mode. But, the restart only results in a blank screen. The only way to proceed from here is to force a shutdown.

I am running XP Home

Any ideas ?

Auto-reboot disable:
When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will automatically restart, often it will restart too fast for you to see the error message.
To disable auto restart on system failure, so you can see the error message.

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

Tried unchecking "automatic restart " & it didnt help.
On further investigation,I think the system is only shutting down the monitor, and failing to shut down/standby the system. The same thing is happening with the "hibernate" function.
When I restart the monitor, the system is saying other users are logged on & asking do I really want to shut down. No other users are logged on.
