Despite auto insert being selected on both my CDROM drives neither will open a cd automaticaly
on insertion. The drives will read as normal using RUN or My Computer to navigate to the drive.

Previous answers have not helped as I am still using Windows ME

Does this happen with all your CD's, since some come without the autoplay file.
You have probably tried this, but to enable autoplay in ME, Open my computer select cd drive and look for the icon Setup.exe or Autorun.inf.Double click the first or right click the second and choose install from the shortcut menu.Either will enable the autorun.

You can check for and repair this problem using REGEDIT. Enter REGEDIT in the Start menu's Run command and navigate to the key

hkey_ current _user\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

In the right-hand pane, look for the value NoDriveTypeAutoRun.

Its data may read "ff ff ff ff".

If so, double-click it and correct it to read "95 00 00 00".
