Audio problem

I've purchased a Multivision nForce333 PC. It has an onboard 5.1 sound card and Videologic 5.1 speakers. There are 3 outputs on the tower unit for sub/middle;front;rear spaekers. When playing a CD, there's no output from the tower unit to the sub/middle connection. The other two channels do have an output. I've swapped the cables around so that the sub, middle and front speakers work - I can live without the rear speakers at the moment. A Multivision helpline person:"if you're playing a CD you won't get 5 channel sound but you will with a DVD".
I don't know much about the technical side of PCs, but this sounds like b*llsh*t.
Is he right and do I need a better sound card?

A normal 2 channel stereo CD does not normally produce 5.1 sound.
