We need to know if it's onboard sound or a sound card and the make and model.

If you have onboard sound, then post the make and model of the motherboard.

is the mother board were it says "Main Circuit Board "?

i think it a sound card,as we plug speakers into the back of it.

there is no volume icon in the taskbar beside the clock, sounds and audio devices properties is greyed out.

If were you plug in the speakers is in a block that includes the usb, keyboard and mouse connections. You are using onboard sound.

If you plug the speakers into sockets away from those fittings and in a horizontal line well below them. You are using a sound card.

" Main Circuit Board " Should be fine for onboard or is the computer from a maker like HP or dell?

sound card, and the maker is dell

Did the sound card come with the machine? If it did, what is the model number of the dell.

Have you looked in device manager for any yellow exclamation marks. If they are any can you post what they are here.

If the card came with the dell machine, the drivers should be on the restore CD.
