Audio distortion problem

Widows XP home:

I am having a problem with audio reproduction. Some sound files reproduce correctly but others sound very muffled and distorted as though being played underwater and at much reduced volume.

The following reproduce correctly:

Windows opening and closing jingles
Audio CD
WMV files

The following are distorted

MP3 files
Streamed radio (BBC and Classic FM)
The Skype ‘Whoosh’

I have tried playing MP3 files using Windows Media Player, Jet Audio player and Real Alternative Media Player Classic - all with the same result.

I have also run scannow.

Any thoughts please?

Curioser and curioser - the music on Classic FM plays OK but the speech is virtually unintellible.

Since last post have reinstalled WMP and Real player alternative.

Have also discovered that some WAV files play OK others don't.
