Audio cable from DVD drives

Can anyone with more sense that me tell me why there is an audio cable supplied that goes from the CD/DVD drives to the motherboard.
I have just done a clean install and forgot to connect it, but audio still works when playing CD`s.
If they are necessary how do you connect 2 drives to one mobo socket??Is there an adaptor.

With XP and later the audio cables are not necessary - they are I believe, necessary for Win ME and Earlier.

No - not even for ME - don't remeber about earlier than that tho'!

Not needed in Win98SE either.

Some drives have headphone sockets maybe they were for that reason
