when you e-mail an attachment to outlook where is it stored on the hard drive?

It stays with the email, unless the recipient saves the attachment to a different place of their choosing - like for instance, a Picture saved to My Pictures.

Have you done a Search - Start>Search then type in name of Document, or have you just looked in your Documents folder?

Or this might help ... click here

I did a *.doc search of complete hard drive

Might it have been saved as a .txt file?

Outlook emails are stored in *.pst files
The attachments are part of the email

The default location where Outlook 2003 stores your data is in Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst
