I have been sent an attachment, but when I try to open it the following message appears.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel.

Does anyone know what this means, and how do I open it, as it is extremely important.

And I can’t contact the sender to re-send it tonight.

Is this a .pps file or some other file format?

It says Unknown File Type

The file name will have an extension of three letters after it, such as filename.exe or filename.pps etc. What is the extension after the filename ?

Save the attachment. What is the file extension?

If you can't see the file extension:

1. Click Start.
2. Click My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Click Yes to confirm.
7. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Click OK.

"It says Unknown File Type"

Bacause the system does not recognise what program is needed to open it. Probably because you do't have the correct program to open it.

If you follow VoGs procedure, and let us know - then we'll likely be able to tell you what you need to do to open it. The commonest files that this happens to are Microsoft Power Point files - hence VoG original reply.

Hope that clarifies it all some more.
