Hello,

I have an old computer that I am trying to make usable. For a couple years the DVD drive has not played dvds....it plays pc games and cd music.

I have uploaded
XP Service Pack 2
Windows Media Player 11
Purchased a dvd decoder from Intervideo

still no luck.
The drive is labeled as a dvd, but under properties it is labeled as:

Type: CD Drive
File System: Unknown

Ive read a little on the forums and the net and have downloaded a few softwares suggested to other problems....no luck

any thoughts?

thanks

wes

You are positive its a least a dvd rom drive ?

There are a few things you can try;

First, run this tool from Doug Knox click here

well is used to play dvd movies when we got the computer back in 2003. And that tool was one of the downloads I already experimented with.

since I just purchased the decoder....Im hoping to get it to work properly if I can

Try updating the firmware on the DVD drive

firmware? what is that.

When I was using the troubleshooter I noticed that the 2 dvd decoders on the computer did not support/compatible with windows media player 10....and since I have version 11 I assumed that was the problem....now that I purchased InterVideo's MP3+DVD Xpack...hoping to get it to work...will try to look at this firmware

thanks

Maybe worth installing the codec pack to see if you have missing or damaged codecs click here
