I have been looking at the Asus A8N series motherboards.

The Deluxe and Premium have two 1GB LAN ports over just one 1GB LAN on the Standard motherboard.

What exactly would you use two 1GB ports for please !?

It's not usual to have two LAN ports, but I have seen them used one to connect into a local network, the other to a single port ADSL modem.

For a home user these days, I can't really see where you might want two ports.

For use with Internet Connection Sharing?

Also on my A8N-SLi they are different types

nForce4 built-in Gbit MAC with external Marvell PHY :
- NV ActiveArmor
- NV Firewall
- AI NET2

MARVELL PCI Gbit LAN controller :
- AI NET2

No idea what the difference is though.

However the board also features two types of SATA ports - 4 controled by Nforce and 4 by Silicon Image chip. I'm using the nForce ones....

I presume there is a reason such as one is preferable under certian circumstances....

i use 1 of my lan ports for my networked printer, and will use the other for my broadband, when I get it.

Thing is if you look hard enough, you can usually find a use for anything:-)
