My laptop's screen now has squares all over it. I know enough to know that this is likely a graphics card gone kaput (ATi mobility radeon 9700) - my question is this though: Are Graphics Cards for this laptop replaceable or will I have to get another laptop? :-(

(gives me an excuse to move to mac full tme though ;) )

Could be a software problem - have you tried removing the graphics software, rebooting and installing new drivers?

I don't think that the hardware can be replaced.

Ah. okay.

No I haven't as I can't see a thing when I boot it up.

This is what my screen looks like: click here

well what it looked like anyway, the longer you leave it on the worse it seems to get (I managed to transfer my documents over to the external :) )

sorry that link to the picture doesn't work, please : - click here instead :)

Neither link works for me - the second wants me to sign up for an account.

Try uploading image to imageshack

When you boot up, do you see anything? The usual BIOS text etc?

Try pressing F8 to get a menu and boot into VGA mode.

When I boot up I see L k g B o D c (This used to say looking for boot disc, I have it on for when I want to use linux) - and then the usual XP loading bar but with a load of squares over it.

As to the picture I was trying to upload it to photobucket but the site wasn't responding. I'll try again.

This sounds like you need a fresh install of windows

PS keep tapping F8 as computer starts, See if you get clear start up list to choose from, if you do choose safe mode at the top
