Are ddr333 and ddr400 interchangable for a laptop?

  Diodorus Siculus 21:17 28 Apr 2008

The RAM on a friend's laptop has failed so I took it out and run the machine on the 256MB that is inbuilt.

Anyway, the ram I took out was DDR 200pin 333 / 2.5 V

Novatech sell a 1GB module for £56 or so.

They also sell 1gb of DDR 400 for £36.

Can we use the DDR 400?

It's for a Novatech branded Mitac 8081 if that helps.

Thanks as always,

I've read that but can't see anything relevant. What am I missing?

200 pin strikes me as being very rare. Hi Dio! I always go to Crucial and run their "Scan My Computer" utility - remember to "shop in pounds" - they`ve never let me down yet and a simple phone call puts your mind at rest. Money back guarantee, I think - never had to use it!

I thinks it's a question of whether the CPU supports the speed (333 or 400). If it only supports 333 then fitting 400 is a waste of time. It can be done the other way around of course.
Use Crucial as Taff™ suggests - you are not obliged to buy from them but at least you will get the feedback you require.

Thanks guys; Crucial slipped my mind somehow- it's where I always go for RAM for myself...

I understand that DDR400 may not be utilised but for a saving of £20 I'd go with it.

Anyway, will run the crucial scanner and see what we come up with.

Cheers, Dio

The crucial scanner doesn't recognise it...?

I'll get onto Novatech and see what they say; generally they are very helpful.

Cheers, Dio

Novatech people sorted it for me.
