Are all IBM startup appls for ThinkPad T42 needed?

  cherm 06:02 01 Nov 2004

My new T42's startup list includes the following long list of IBM originated applications:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe
C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Rapid Restore Ultra\rrpcsb.exe
C:\Program Files\IBM\Messages By IBM\ibmmessages.exe
C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\QCTRAY.EXE
C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\QCWLICON.EXE
C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPONSCR.exe
C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY_1\TpScrex.exe

Are all really needed? What does each of these do?

Some are not necessary - eg messages from IBM

nor \Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe

Others I am not sure of. Why not disable one or two at a time and restart. Then after a few hours use, you can tell if they are needed. Some will just add functionality that you will not miss anyway; others may be integral to the full running of the machine. None, however, should prevent it from starting and running.

Trial and error may be the only way.
