Applying thermal compound

  marty03321 17:22 17 Feb 2011

I have just bought some Atrix thermal compound because I have to replace the chip set fan on my motherboard. The instructions say that I have to use isopropyl to clean the old compound off.

What is this?

Can I use anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Iso Propyl Alcohol can be bought at most chemists and has the virtue of dissolving the gunge to give a clean metal surface without the risk of attacking plastics and other sunstamces around the motherboard.

Cellulose thinners is an excellent example of what NOT to use

Don't be tempted to use anything else

As crossbow has said, i nicked my wifes nail varnish. Only apply a small blob in the middle, the thermal compound will then squeeze outwards.

If tempted to use nail varnish remover do ensure it's a pure alcohol based one and not one with Lanolin in it, rather counter-productive that way.

Baby wipes do the job as well
