applications sometimes fail to start

I'm running Windows XP PRO - sometimes, after booting up, my applications will not load. The timer comes up for a few seconds, then goes away. Some minutes later, the application appears in the task bar - several times, if I've made several attempts to start the application, such as MS Word. I was advised to run Scandisk but can't find it anywhere.

"Scandisk" is called chkdsk in XP.

To run it open My Computer, right click the C drive and select Properties. On the Tools tab run Error-checking. Probably worth defragmenting afterwards as well.

And/or start run and type cmd the type chkdsk /?

Select what you want.

do you get any error messages?
If you boot into safe mode are there any problems?
I would run chkdsk /r

I ran checkdisk but it didn't find any problems but at least I know where to find it now. Cheers.
