AOL and BT Freeserve on Win. XP

I am using Windows XP and have also been using AOL for a year with no problems. Tried to connect to Freeserve, but still have AOL installed. When I click onto the freeserve icon on my desktop I get the message: Could not detect modem. It may be in use, turned off or not installed properly. Apparently this is an XP glitch as my friend also has the same problem. My pc is running ok except for this. Can anyone advise?

When you try to connect to Freeserve, do you get the message modem in use. Maybe AOL is using it.

I have tried to connect even after taking off all of AOL and still no luck.

I had a similar problem with Win Me. I solved it by formatting HDD and leaving AOL alone!
