I saw this posted on another forum for Honda cars.

A member stated that his computer was infected, and requested advice. This is a copy of one of the replies: -

If you can get a copy or burn a copy of either the ultimatebootcd or ubcd4win, you get a bootable CD with lots of anti-virus and other utilities that can scan your hard disk without running within your (infected) version of windows

I've used it once or twice to recover both from disk problems/corruption and viruses.

I visited both sites just now, but did not download. Hopefully some of the experienced members of this forum might like to comment on whether these two utilities are worthwhile having.

Made and used ultimate boot CD great for "disinfecting" and corrupt PCs.

Me too! Have used them both successfully on infected computers. Very useful tools.

I have used both, UBCD4win presents you with your familiar Windows GUI, and much like using a live linux cd you can browse your system and connect to LAN and internet.

UBCD4win does require a little more work in building it yourself rather than downloading an iso (MS files are used, therefore you have to provide these from your own installation)but instructions have been provided and there is a forum if you get lost or need help click here

Thanks to all of you who have posted to this topic.

While I appreciate what both of these utilities are capable of accomplishing, they could also cause more problems than they solve. They also require a fair degree of knowledge in order to select which item's to download and burn to CD.

In summary, I consider that they are a tool for an IT specialist, rather than the average PC user....and could be lethal for a beginner!!

In my case I shall not bother to download either of them, but I will bookmark them. If I do have a problem then I shall bootup using my Norton Internet Security CD, or try safe mode or a simple MS-Dos boot floppy. Or even by using my XP Home CD.

As regards the original source of my initial post for this topic. The person who was infected re-booted a couple of times again, eventually it did boot OK with a message from Windows stating " this system has recovered from a major problem". Or words to a similat effect!

I shall not mark this topic as resolved as long as interest remains.
